Ep 16 | Get to know the Freedom CBD Lab Crew
You have to have your mind ready to learn new about things, figure out problems, and be able to figure them out relatively quickly. If you're looking to get into the industry, seek out these CBD extraction facilities and put yourself out there in a positive light.
Today's episode features the lab crew from the Freedom CBD! You'll get to know them and what they do inside and outside the lab.
Meet Ryan Atagi, Lab Manager. Been here since the beginning, about a year and a half ago.
I'm Tyson Mairs, Assistant Lab Manager. I've been here roughly about the same amount of time. Pretty much since the equipment got here.
I'm Olivia – I'm the lead extraction technician. I got here January this year so close to a full year.
My name is Corey. I work here as a distillation technician and could be coming up on some compliance duties. Transferring from recreational marijuana to CBD.
What brought each of you into the CBD industry?
Ryan A.: I got into it through our host Ryan S. He was starting this whole journey and we had a talk about what was going on and I knew I had a skill set that could help in the lab and before long I was on board.
Tyson M.: One of the bigger interests on our end was the health aspects. I had a sister with cancer. And at the time it would have been great to have had the access to CBD like we do now to help with health issues.
Olivia: I got in through fieldwork. I've always had a passion for helping people. It's always been my #1 priority. I love the sciences and art. The lab here and the CBD industry has been a surprising combination of those things. I got introduced to them through a friend and have really just worked my way up into the lab.
Corey: I came in from the medical marijuana industry. In a time where it was going away. I was looking to come in and help people. CBD is growing and medical is going down so it was a great time to make a switch.
Ryan S.: What surprises you most about the process?
Tyson: Each piece of equipment has its own personality. I love learning about each piece.
Ryan S.: Atagi, what advice do you have for folks that want to get into the lab side of things?
Ryan A.: Hardworker, analytical mind, interest in learning things. Every day we're learning new things. Having a background in science or chemistry can help you get your foot in the door but it's about being willing to put in hard work. We're constantly moving, constantly cleaning and always making sure you have your thinking cap on. It's a great industry to be in.
We're looking for chemists, lab experience, fluid dynamics backgrounds, brewing expertise.

Ryan S.: What does an average day in the lab look like?
Corey: For a typical distillation the primary distillation side is my playground. I'll come in around 7:30 am and set up my equipment and by 8:00 the material is in the tank and I'm filling it with ethanol. It's about an hour till the distillation starts. 9:00 – 3:00 ish I'm running it through distillation. I'm generation oil and ethanol and continuously dumping out my ethanol tanks till I hit the end of my day at 4:00 pm. And that's not really the end of my day. Then it's cleaning all the equipment and getting it prepped for the next day. I'm usually out by 5:00 pm. It's a pretty independent process.
Ryan S: What makes our CBD product so special?
Olivia: We have a special team. And I've always been a fan of products that are made with love. What it means to me is that it was thoughtfully created and that the consumer is considered throughout the process. I think we do a really good job because we do it because we want to help. We check each other on procedures and processes. The teamwork really makes it. We have fun while we do what we're doing but pay close attention.
Ryan S: What would you say about the quality of our oil?
Ryan A: We make the highest quality we possibly can. We're always checking our steps and the finished product. What can we improve! We also pay attention to the competition. We also listen to the farmers we produce for. They took the product we made for them and sold it. I'm always asking them for feedback. They always came back happy.
Ryan S.: What's it like being a female in a male-dominated industry?
Olivia: I'm always on my toes. Trying to make as many good comebacks as I can. I love it. Everyone feels like a brother and has my back. There are times I wish there were more ladies here for advice. It's challenging but I find a lot of support from my work family. I try to rise up and learn from them and bounce off of them.
Ryan A.: She's only 21 years old and super smart. This is a brand new industry. The exciting thing for me is mentoring her and sharing what I know about lab stuff. By the time she's my age at the ripe old age of 43, she's going to be a leader in this whole field. She's going to be one of the most knowledgable people in the CBD industry potentially. And to be a female, and know what she knows it's going to be exciting.
Ryan S.: What do you do when you're not working?
Ryan A.: I spend a lot of time with my family. This job is demanding, I don't always have the 8-5 but I try as much as I can. I teach a Japanese fencing class – Redmond Kendo. We go and play disc golf on Mondays as a lab team.
Tyson: I've been dating a new lady. Otherwise, I'm training my new puppy German Shephard. Play disc golf, have a few drinks. Go to BBQs. Scare my co-workers.
Olivia: I'm a huge fan of junk and recycling. I'm really good at CraigsList free. Almost my entire house is furnished off that. I like to make art out of it, especially yard art. It's a great way to pick up trash and recycle. I have a dog and we go out on adventures. Backpacking, camping and fly fishing.
Corey: Cannabis-related. I do a lot of growing or educating people about it. Also, like playing pool.
